If you’ve spent any time in the cancer world, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “It takes a village.”
The truth is, cancer doesn’t just happen to one person.
It happens to spouses suddenly learning how to be caregivers. To parents sitting in waiting rooms. To children trying to understand why Mom is tired all the time. To friends who want to help but don’t know how. To families juggling appointments, meals, bills, childcare, medications, paperwork, and fear.
Cancer touches entire villages.
When I was diagnosed, I quickly learned that treatment is only one small piece of surviving cancer. There are so many needs that happen outside the walls of an oncology office.
Who helps clean the house when you’re too sick to stand?
Who delivers groceries when chemo wipes you out for a week?
Who helps navigate insurance battles?
Who knows where to find financial assistance, transportation help, support groups, meal programs, counseling, wigs, prosthetics, childcare resources, palliative care, or simply someone who understands?
Too often, patients and families are left trying to find these answers in the middle of the hardest season of their lives.
That is why we’re building The Village.
The Village is a community resource and support event coming to the Port Orange area this fall with one goal:
To bring the helpers into one room.
We want cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and families to walk through the doors and discover resources they never knew existed.
We want local organizations, nonprofits, businesses, medical providers, support groups, service providers, and community members to have an opportunity to share what they do and connect directly with the people who need them most.
Imagine a room filled with:
• Financial assistance programs
• House cleaning services
• Meal delivery organizations
• Grocery support resources
• Transportation assistance
• Support groups
• Mental health resources
• Medical providers and specialists
• Nutrition support
• Hospice and palliative care information
• Fitness and wellness programs
• Child and family resources
• Businesses offering services to patients and caregivers
• Local nonprofits doing incredible work in our community
And alongside those resources, we want to create a day that feels hopeful.
A day with raffles, giveaways, community partners, local businesses, good conversations, and moments of joy in the middle of a journey that often feels incredibly heavy.
Because cancer patients deserve more than appointments and medications.
They deserve community.
They deserve support.
They deserve a village.
How You Can Help
If you know an organization, nonprofit, medical office, support group, business, or service that helps cancer patients or caregivers in any way, please connect us.
If they can make life easier for someone facing cancer, we want them at The Village.
Become a sponsor.
Events like this only happen because businesses and community members step up to help build them.
Sponsors help us create survival kits, provide resources, support event costs, and make sure this event remains free for the families who need it.
Donate.
We’re gratefully accepting monetary donations, raffle items, products for survival kits, gift cards, services, and experiences that can help support patients and caregivers.
Every contribution makes a difference.
Volunteer.
We need helping hands before the event and on the day itself.
Whether that’s organizing donations, helping with setup, assisting vendors, coordinating raffles, or simply welcoming guests, there is a place for you in this village.
Attend.
If you’re a patient, survivor, caregiver, family member, friend, or simply someone who wants to support the community, come spend the day with us.
Learn about resources.
Meet amazing organizations.
Support local businesses.
Connect with people who understand.
Most importantly, help us prove that nobody should have to face cancer alone.
